Indoor Home Maintenance Winter Checklist

Winter weather brings cooler temperatures, snow and icy conditions. It also means potential headaches and expenses to deal with. Use this checklist for indoor home maintenance for the winter season to keep your costs down this winter.

  • Replace furnace filters on a regular basis, to keep the air in your home clean and safe. They should be changed every three months, but factors such as living with pets or smokers may cause the frequency to increase.
  • Clean kitchen appliances inside and out, including refrigerator coils. This will keep them running efficiently and effectively.
  • Keep drains clean by mixing half a cup of baking soda with half a cup of white vinegar. After 10 minutes, flush with boiling water. This prevents pipes from clogging, and avoids unnecessary plumbing expenses.
  • Hire a professional to inspect your chimney and fireplace. They will examine for corrosion, wear and damage, and recommend any necessary cleaning or repairs.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at least twice per year, and replace batteries if necessary. Winter is a dangerous time for fires, especially if there is a fireplace in the home.
  • Seal windows, doors, and electrical outlets. Inspect caulking around windows, doors, and entryways, and replace if damaged or worn. This prevents additional heat from escaping your home, and increases to your hydro bill.
  • Repair leaky faucets, and heat tape pipes. Frozen pipes during winter months can burst, causing damage to your home and bank account. Wrap accessible water pipes with heat tape, and repair or replace leaky pipes, gaskets, and valves.
  • Double check fire extinguishers. It’s a good idea to have at least one in your home. Check to ensure it’s in good working order, and replace or refill yours if it’s not up to par.

Winter can be an expensive and dangerous season if you’re not prepared. Planning in advance will help reduce household bills, avoid expensive repairs, and protect the inside of your home.
